The second annual Riley Schau Memorial Novice Tournament was held this past weekend. It seems that whenever you plan an outdoor event, it starts in the rain & ends in the rain, though this didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of these 9 & 10 year olds who played in the puddles.
We had 8 teams play this year with each of the city’s 4 zones represented. We would like to thank Terry Williams who spent Saturday and Sunday guiding & overseeing the young referees. We also wish to extend thanks to Morse Place Community Centre for hosting the event again this year.
The level of play for this age group is improving at a rapid pace, the stick skills, use of plays & goaltending were wonderful to watch.
The semi final games were played on Sunday morning with the final game at 1:00 pm. This match saw 2 Gryphons teams vying for supremacy. The winner was undecided at the end of regulation time. At the 3-minute mark of a sudden death period their fate was sealed with Gryphons E3 claiming victory.
In case you are wondering, Riley Schau was a founding member of the Gryphons Lacrosse. His dad, Warren was very involved in this organization at the executive & coaching levels. Riley passed away at a young age and we honour his memory & his family’s contribution to our sport.
We would like to thank all the players, coaches & parents who helped make this tournament a success.
